Adult, Youth and Family Counseling Services

Family Service Spokane’s (FSS’s) Adult, Youth and Family Counseling Services are designed to assist individuals and families who are impacted by a broad spectrum of mental health issues and diagnoses. These include, but are not limited to, depression and anxiety disorders, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder and other behavioral disorders for youth.  Depending on the needs of the individual, services may be provided at any of the agency’s three office sites, and at times are provided at other locations in the community.

Goals of Services

The focus of FSS’s Counseling Services is to assist individuals in effectively dealing with their mental illness  and attain an optimal level of mental health functioning.  To achieve this, services provided include:

Providing individuals and families with information and tools necessary to successfully manage their problems or symptoms of a mental illness;

Helping individuals develop healthy coping skills;

Helping individuals and families develop supports; and

Assisting individuals in accessing necessary resources in the community.

Description of Services

Services begin with a comprehensive mental health assessment to determine the needs of the individual seeking services.  Once this has been completed, an individual service plan is developed with the person by a primary mental health care provider (counselor) assigned to them within the agency.  The counselor then schedules appointments on a routine basis with the individual for the purpose of working together to achieve identified treatment goals.  Frequency of meetings, as well as the length of service, varies according to the unique needs of the individual.

Counseling may also include other family members, or participation in groups or classes if this is indicated and of interest to the individual.  Services also include coordination with other care providers, such as healthcare providers or medication prescribers.  Services oftentimes also involve linkage with various other resources in the community to help meet individuals’ needs in areas such as housing, transportation,  or accessing benefits.
